Like never before, this region is demanding diverse
cultural experiences. The response of the Multicultural
Arts Initiative is to connect arts consumers with a
variety of quality multicultural arts offerings.
MCAI has three strategic goals:
- Increase the quality and quantity of culturally
diverse programming.
- Strengthen African American arts organizations
and infrastructures to support individual artists
in order to provide increased value and benefit
to the primary customer—consumers of African
American and culturally diverse arts programming
in greater Pittsburgh and the surrounding region.
- Increase awareness and visibility of culturally
diverse arts in the region.
Accomplishments Include:
- Strategic Alliances: MCAI partnered with
the Pittsburgh Urban League to support a platform
for local African American arts and cultural programming
during the 2003 National Urban League Conference,
hosted by the local chapter.
- Capacity Building: Designed and implemented
a tailored technical assistance program (TAP) to
provide strategic organizational development and
artistic advancement opportunities for selected
African American arts organizations.
- Strategic Grantmaking: Targeted grantmaking
to support projects bringing nationally and internationally
renown African American artists to Pittsburgh region audiences, e.g. Denyce Graves
in Concert, presented by the Links, Inc. Pittsburgh Chapter; Africa: One Continent
Many Worlds, presented by the Carnegie Museums of Natural History; Ron K. Brown’s
Evidence presented by the Pittsburgh Dance Council; and the African American
Dance Showcase, presented by the African American Cultural Center during the
National Performing Arts Convention in Pittsburgh.
- Grantmaking History: Since 1991, the Multicultural
Arts Initiative has awarded close to $5 million
and over 400 grants to arts organizations, individual
artists and community-based organizations—Grants.
