Eligibility Information

What types of projects are eligible for funding?

  1. Projects
    Project grants are for individual artists, arts organizations or community organizations to support projects including:  exhibitions, performances, theatrical presentations, poetry readings, commission and/or support of new works and arts festivals.  Funding supports artists’ fees and other reasonable costs associated with the performance or exhibition including space rental, installation, shipping and documentation.

  2. Residencies
    Support for residences should emphasize in-depth interaction between professional artists and an on-going individual or group of participants through workshops and classes.  Residencies are open to all artistic disciplines and can include any of the following areas: visual artists, directors, composers, curators, conductors, musicians, dancers or technical and/or production staff, and artists from areas outside of Allegheny County.

  3. Training and Internship Programs
    MCAI supports the development and building of strong, knowledgeable African American arts managers.  Training and internship programs should target high school and college students and provide experience within arts and cultural organizations.  Program design should include involvement in organizational management and artistic development.  Also included should be a tangible product at the end of the internship, i.e. market study, student write-up, etc.

Who Can Apply?

Organizations…

  • Must be recognized as not-for-profit or have a recognized not-for-profit agency act as a conduit or fiscal agent (not-for-profit organization must be based in Allegheny County);

  • Please provide a copy of your Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) tax exemption letter.  If using a conduit or fiscal agency, please attach a copy of the conduit or fiscal agent’s 501(c)(3) tax exemption letter, a letter from the organization’s executive director indicating willingness to serve as your conduit or fiscal agency, board list and a brief statement of the fiscal agent’s mission;

  • When working with a fiscal agent, you should obtain a letter of understanding or terms of agreement letter.  This document should include: what services will be provided by each party; whether the fiscal agent will be paid a fee, and if so, for what and how much; how payments will be made, roles and responsibilities of fiscal agent and grantee; and how the arrangement can be terminated, and the consequences of termination;

  • Must have an active Board of Directors or a comparable group that meets on a regular basis to determine and direct organizational policies.

Artists…

  • Must use a fiscal agent;

  • Must submit work samples via video, CDs, cassette tapes, manuscripts, slides or photographs;

  • Must demonstrate financial need for project funding.
